CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The phenomena of digital transformation has seen a notable rise in prevalence, leading to significant changes in several domains of society, including the field of corporate management. In the specific context of Cameroon, an economy experiencing fast development and a quickly expanding digital environment, it is imperative to comprehend the ramifications of digital transformation on corporate management. This knowledge is essential for promoting sustainable economic growth and enhancing competitiveness. The primary objective of this research is to conduct a complete evaluation of the influence of digital transformation on corporate management strategies in Cameroon. This will be achieved by analysing many sectors, and identifying the associated difficulties and possibilities (Baker & Davis, 2020). Organisations use digital transformation strategies to utilise digital technology and data in order to generate value, boost efficiency, and improve customer experience (Brown & Patel, 2019). Various digital transformation techniques exist, contingent upon the objectives and capacities of the organisation. Several of the more probable options include: This approach entails the transformation of analogue data into digital forms and the automation of pre-existing procedures. The objective is to minimise expenses, mistakes, and inefficiency, while enhancing efficiency and precision. Digitization has the potential to enhance operational excellence and quality, hence improving organisational performance (Chakraborty & Bhatt, 2018). Utilising digital technology and data, this approach entails the development of novel goods, services, or business models. The objective is to create additional sources of income, broaden market reach, and distinguish oneself from rivals. The process of digitalization has the potential to enhance organisational performance via the promotion of innovation and expansion (Nambisan, 2017). The process entails a comprehensive reassessment and restructuring of the whole organisation with a focus on digital technology and data. The primary objective is to foster a corporate environment characterised by adaptability, cooperation, and innovation, while also ensuring that the organisation remains in sync with evolving client demands and anticipations. According to Fokam and Tafese (2019), the implementation of digital transformation has the potential to enhance organisational performance via the augmentation of customer happiness and loyalty. Additionally, it facilitates the establishment and engagement in a network of digital platforms, partners, and customers, enabling the sharing of data, resources, and value. The objective is to use the combined intellect, capacities, and magnitude of the participants inside the ecosystem. According to Johnson and Yamamoto (2017), the digital ecosystem has the potential to enhance organisational performance by bolstering resilience, adaptation, and cocreation. The complex nature of digital transformation has a significant influence on corporate management in Cameroon. The introduction of digital solutions for activities like as inventory management, accounting, and customer relationship management has enhanced operational efficiency via digitalization. Additionally, it has facilitated enhanced connection, therefore enabling companies to expand their market reach, interact with consumers, and foster more efficient collaborations with partners. Furthermore, the use of data analytics and business intelligence has significantly enhanced the process of decision-making, allowing organisations to extract valuable insights from extensive datasets in order to shape strategies and enhance overall performance (Mbiydzenyuy & Esono, 2017). Digital transformation in Cameroon has many obstacles, such as insufficient infrastructure, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, deficiencies in digital literacy, and legislative limitations, despite its advantages. Furthermore, the disparity in access to technology and opportunity is worsened by the digital divide between urban and rural communities (Ngoasong & Kalafatis, 2016). Nevertheless, these constraints also provide opportunities for creativity and cooperation, namely in harnessing mobile technology and creating customised solutions that are specifically designed for the unique circumstances of Cameroon. The potential of digital transformation to revolutionise corporate management methods in Cameroon is significant, since it has the capacity to enhance efficiency, foster innovation, and enhance competitiveness. Nevertheless, the actualization of this potential necessitates collaborative endeavours to tackle obstacles pertaining to infrastructure, skills development, and regulatory frameworks. Cameroon may establish itself as a frontrunner in digital innovation and facilitate sustainable economic development by adopting digitalization and promoting cooperation among government, companies, and civil society. Therefore, the researcher sought to assess the impact of digital transformation on business management in Cameroon.
1.2 Statement of the problem
The global business environment has seen significant changes in recent years due to the emergence of digital technology. Cameroon, like to several other nations, is now experiencing the ramifications of the ongoing digital revolution. Nevertheless, the precise scope and consequences of this shift on company management methodologies in Cameroon remain uncertain. Hence, it is important to examine and assess the influence of digital transformation on business administration in the specific context of Cameroon (Ngueutsa & Aguele, 2020).
Digital transformation strategies refer to the use of digital technology in order to establish or alter corporate processes, goods, or services in order to effectively address evolving consumer and market demands. The company sector in Cameroon encounters several obstacles, including limited internet accessibility, elevated operating expenditures, and a scarcity of proficient labour (Njanja, Tadewos & Amdissa, 2018). Hence, it is crucial to analyse the impact of digital transformation methods on enhancing the operational efficiency of retail enterprises in Cameroon.
