CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Cameroon, situated in Central Africa, is renowned for its abundant cultural and ethnic variety, including more than 250 ethnic groups. The presence of several cultures has not only enriched the nation's cultural vitality, but has also played a crucial role in moulding its political environment. The complex relationship between ethnicity and politics in Cameroon has been a topic of scholarly investigation and socio-political discussion for many years (Bachus, 2019).
To fully comprehend the influence of ethnic diversity on politics in Cameroon, it is essential to do a thorough analysis of the historical, social, and political circumstances. The nation-state's intricate tapestry of ethnic identities was established as a result of the country's colonial history, when European powers delineated boundaries in an arbitrary manner. After gaining independence in 1960, Cameroon faced the difficulties of constructing a unified country in the midst of a variety of linguistic, cultural, and ethnic groupings (Bathuure, Brobbey & Bawa, 2020).
The role of ethnicity in Cameroonian politics has consistently influenced election dynamics, government systems, and intergroup interactions. Political parties often organise themselves based on ethnic affiliations, using ethnic affinities to obtain support and strengthen their control (Bello, 2018). Furthermore, the distribution of resources, such as government positions and development initiatives, has been influenced by ethnic considerations, resulting in the impression of marginalisation and exclusion among certain populations.
The enduring consequences of ethno-political tensions have not only impacted voting procedures but have also materialised in sporadic episodes of aggression and clashes amongst different communities (Gadjanova, 2017). The Anglophone issue, exemplified by historical grievances and perceived marginalisation of Anglophone areas, highlights the complex interaction between ethnicity, politics, and socio-economic differences in Cameroon (Hassan, 2020).
The importance of dealing with ethnic variety and its impact on political stability, social cohesion, and inclusive governance in Cameroon is acknowledged by both scholars and policymakers. Nevertheless, current scholarly investigations often provide conflicting viewpoints about the character and scope of ethnic impact on political procedures, hence requiring further empirical investigation and intricate examination (Kumase, 2018). The study aims to enhance the ongoing discussion by conducting an empirical evaluation of the correlation between ethnic diversity and politics in Cameroon. This study seeks to understand how ethnicity influences political behaviour, institutions, and results in Cameroon. It employs a multidisciplinary approach that combines quantitative data analysis, qualitative research methodologies, and comparative case studies (Lewis, 2015). This research aims to provide valuable insights that may guide evidence-based policy actions to promote inclusive governance, reduce interethnic conflicts, and create national unity in Cameroon. To foster a fair and robust democratic society in Cameroon, stakeholders must comprehend the intricacies of ethnic diversity and its influence on politics. Therefore, the researcher sought to assess ethnic diversity and its impact on politics in Cameroon.
1.2 Statement of the problem
Cameroon, a country known for its diverse range of ethnic groups, is the focus of much academic research and public attention due to the complex relationship between ethnic diversity and political dynamics. Although ethnic variety has the ability to promote cultural richness and social unity, it often overlaps with political processes, impacting governance structures, election results, policy development, and intergroup relationships (Mills, 2018). Nevertheless, the exact characteristics and scope of this influence are not well understood, hindering efficient administration, promoting conflicts based on identity, and possibly compromising the stability of the country.
The current body of research offers incomplete understanding of the correlation between ethnic diversity and politics in Cameroon. There is a scarcity of thorough studies that explore the many aspects of this interaction(Mişcoiu & Kakdeu, 2021). While several studies emphasise the capacity of ethnic variety to enhance democratic representation and inclusive government, others emphasise its tendency to promote factionalism, ethnocentrism, and political marginalisation. Moreover, the lack of a cohesive framework for assessing the impact of ethnic diversity on political processes impedes the creation of policies that are supported by evidence and designed to foster national cohesion, fair representation, and long-term growth. Hence, the study assess ethnic diversity and its impact on politics in Cameroon.
1.3 Objective of the study
The broad objective of the study is to assess ethnic diversity and its impact on politics in Cameroon. The specific objectives is as follows
To investigate the role of ethnicity on governance structures in Cameroon.
Assess the impact of ethnicity in shaping political dynamics in Cameroon
To assess the impact of ethnic diversity on political stability within Cameroonian political landscape.

What is the impact of ethnicity in shaping political dynamics in Cameroon?
What is the impact of ethnic diversity on political stability within Cameroonian political landscape.
1.5 Significance of the study
The findings of the study will be significant to the government as ethnic diversity can either be a source of strength or a potential fault line in a nation's social fabric. By studying its impact on politics, researchers can identify factors that either exacerbate ethnic tensions or promote social cohesion. This knowledge can inform policies aimed at building inclusive institutions, promoting inter-ethnic dialogue, and mitigating conflicts, thus contributing to long-term stability and harmony.
The findings of the study will be significant to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature.
1.6 Scope of the study
The study focuses on assess ethnic diversity and its impact on politics in Cameroon. Empirically, the study will investigate the role of ethnicity on governance structures in Cameroon, Assess the impact of ethnicity in shaping political dynamics in Cameroon and assess the impact of ethnic diversity on political stability within Cameroonian political landscape.
1.7 Limitations of the study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher resorted to a moderate choice of sample size. More so, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
1.8 Definition of terms
Ethnic Diversity: the existence of people from a variety of cultural and diverse backgrounds within a single area
