CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Introduction
The advent or introduction of education system by the Europeans was a way to improve ourways of life and our style of living. In the 70,s education experts were asking how the system could be integrated into the more formal schooling of the young once. Education system focused mainly on examination.
In 1916, Fredrick Lugard, the first governor of the unified colony set-up a school of inspectorate. Disciplines building and adequate of teaching staff were to be inspected, but the most point gives to a schools performance went to the number and ranking of its examination result. This stress on examination will still use in1990 to judge educational result and to obtain qualification for jobs in government and also private sector.
As more information is made available in a variety of formats and media and in a variety of location the need to manage information and data efficiently becomes more and more critical. Since there is continuous moves toward technological advance that enhanced productivity of labour and free human beings of task more economically by machines. This system is designed to efficiently handle process like inputting scores, sorting result, classifying the grade point automatically calculated and interpreting data of a student overall result. The usual manual process now reached a level where it is difficult for the available man power to cope with the magnitude of examination work, in the given time spans. The most effective measure can improve the efficiency of the examination system, therefore the introduction of computer operation especially with the use of examination result processing software in various activities related to the conduct of result reduces the span required for the declaration of result by 60 percent and reduces the process by at most 50 percent. Therefore, a computerized result processing system is usually a system which is implemented with a computer to achieved the most efficient and desired goal in education sector. The introduction of this computerized system hasprovidemanagement with effective and efficient way of managing pre-ND science result in each of the semester. It is the institutions Policy to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of their result processing operations system and services through the implementation of an integrated automated database System which accurate and effective pre-ND science semester result will be achieved.
1.1 Theoretical Background
From the inception of the 21st century, it is believed that the application of computer activities enhances the speed, accuracy, efficiency and security of those activities. To the researcher, this belief is a theory that needs to be proven over and over again until all thinkable activities are computerized. To this end, the researcher wants to further prove this by designing a computerized result processing system that will compute pre-ND science semester result compare it with the manual method of computation. The synthesis of numerical calculation, pre- determine operation and the output along with a way to organize and input instruction manner relatively easy for human to conceive and produce that which led to the modern development of computer programming.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Information database is vital in today’s education with respect to pre-ND science examination result processing. This has become a very vital issue as students spend so much time trying to know the number of credit units for each semester. This problem has leads to time wasting, inaccuracy of results and even open to fraud. Cases of missing results have been recorded thereby making examination processing more difficult and untimely.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are to:
1. Provide a reliable solution to result processing that is corruption free.
2. Ensure that normal credit load in line with the school is maintained.
3. Provide a software that will generate result that is accurate, timely and error free.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The project work will help in a good number of ways to ease the delay in manual examination processing. The software developed will help schools management to achieve efficient information management system. There are many other advantages, and some of them are listed below.
1. It saves time during examination result processing
2. Database for the examination result is maintained
3. References are very fast and delays can be avoided.
4. It allows easy access to stored information.
5. Help in reducing the costs such as labor, inventory and stationary.
6. Generation of accurate results/information on transactions is sure.
1.5 Organization of the Research
The research work is organized into five chapters, chapter one is the introduction, theoretical background, statement of the problems, objectives of the study, significance of the study, organization of the research, scope and limitations of the study and definition of terms. Chapter two contains the review of related literature, chapter three is about the system design and methodology used in gathering information for the research work, chapter four elucidates about the implementation of the system and the last chapter talks about the summary, conclusion and recommendations.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This research work will concentrate on pre- ND semester examination result system using pre ND science AkwaIbomState polytechnic as a case study. The system developed will only cover pre- ND semester result processing.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Invention: - This is the process of producing or contrives something previously unknown by the use of ingenuity or imagination.
Programming: - This is the act of designing, writing, testing, debugging and troubleshooting and maintaining the source code of the computer program.
Semester: - This refers to the two allotments of academic years, which ranges from 15 to 18 weeks.
Technology: - Is a body of knowledge that is a applied to create tools, build up skills and extract or collect materials.
