CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Over the past two decades, there has been an increasing acknowledgment of the significance of time in organizational literature. Afful-Broni (2018) emphasizes that effectively managing time empowers individuals to seize moments and achieve goals. Time is defined as a finite period during which actions, processes, or conditions unfold, representing the duration required for a specific activity to be completed (Adeyinka, 2022). As a unique and limited resource, time cannot be replaced or accumulated like money, and it cannot be controlled or stored like raw materials. According to Afful-Broni (2018), time consciousness affects every aspect of human existence and is acknowledged as an omnipresent fact that shapes and influences people's lives. In the past, people measured time by using crude techniques and basic observations of the movements of the sun and moon. Also, Manal (2022), assert that time is now essential for many elements of life, such as financial administration, performing arts, weather forecasting, communication, transportation, and supervision. time is an important factor needed to enhance various organizational performances and productivity. Furthermore, a key component of productivity is time. It is an essential tool for reaching both individual and group objectives. As a result, the efficiency of time management and planning determines how much is accomplished in a given amount of time. If one is to manage other resources, then managing time is a necessary. According to Oeij et al. (2022), productivity is thought to be directly related to a business's success or performance. As a result, variables like working conditions and both internal and external factors have an impact on the targeted outputs that organizations set. In the same view, it is further established that working circumstances encompass intrinsic elements such employee work orientation, training, and workplace safety and security, in addition to the working environment and terms of employment. The way time is being managed in an organization will reflect on its performance either positively or negatively. However, effective time management is major challenge most managers of organizations in Cameroon are facing today as they have a lot of duties to perform within a limited time. Nevertheless, high productivity can only be attained if organizations manage their time properly and services are rendered faster than expected. Therefore, a survey will be conducted to  investigate on the impact of technological advancement on the performance of financial institutions in Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

With the recent advancement in technology and the growing trend of employees spending extended hours on social media during regular working hours, instead of optimizing time for work, has emerged as a significant concern for many organizations. However, this issue is particularly challenging for managers who are uncertain about how to address it and are still exploring effective methods to manage time to enhance employee performance. In addition, management practices in numerous organizations often exacerbate the problem by lacking proper enforcement and frameworks for ensuring optimal time utilization by employees. Also, the overall performance of an organization may hinge on how effectively its employees utilize their available time in various activities. The management of time is a recurring challenge in many organizations, with Cucas Ltd, Buea being no exception. In life, it is not merely about doing the right thing; it is about doing the right thing at the right time. Furthermore, previous studies have consistently highlighted that effective time management is a pivotal factor for individual and organizational success (Devos et al., 2018).
